Previous Speyside Whisky Tour Departure Points
In central Speyside: Speyside Whisky Tours depart from Aberlour, Dufftown and Craigellachie.
Speyside Whisky Tours often leave from Aberlour in central Speyside. This small village has two world famous brands at each and of the village, Walkers Shortbread and Aberlour Distillery. It is a close to the River Spey. Whisky tours from Craigellachie are also popular. The village sits in a lovely spot overlooking Craigellachie Bridge. Craigellachie Distillery sits close by unfortunately its not normally open to visitors. Distillery tours from Dufftown are also popular. Dufftown lies a few miles east and is also a popular place to stay for whisky tourers with Glenfiddich Distillery and Balvenie Distillery close by. Further south you will find Glenlivet & Ballindalloch. They are off the beaten track but whisky tours still depart from there.
In north Speyside: Speyside Whisky Tours depart from Elgin, Forres, Keith, Huntly and coastal towns including Lossiemouth and Cullen.
Elgin is a popular place to depart from for Speyside Whisky Tours. It's the main town in Moray Speyside but still has less than 30,000 of population. You are coming to quite a rural area. Elgin is a stop on the railway line between Inverness and Aberdeen and there are a few hotels near the station. Just west of Elgin lies Forres which has lots of history and beautiful flower displays in the summer. It is also home to Benromach Distillery. Other towns on the main railway line include Nairn, Keith and Huntly.
In the past my tours have departed from many hotels and other accommodation types in Speyside, some of which are listed below.
In Aberlour, my Speyside Whisky Tours have left from the Dowans Hotel, Aberlour Hotel and the Mash Tun. Just up the road in Craigellachie departure points have included the Craigellachie Hotel, Craigellachie Lodge and the Highlander Inn.
Other departure points have included the Laichmoray Hotel, Mansion House and The Lodge Guesthouse in Elgin and the Station Hotel (Rothes). Slightly off the beaten track hotels like Blervie House near Forres and Cardhu House near Cardhu Distillery.
The best places to depart from really come down to personal preference. Each village and town has its own strengths. Self catering and Airbnb are becoming increasingly popular, and like hotels, most will have recent reviews to help narrow down your options.
